Unity break success!

Large group of Stanford resident and fellow physicians at a union unity break, standing with signsUnity break success! Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and show support at our unity break on May 17. We had nearly 250 housestaff in attendance, as well as CRONA nurses (including an amazing speech of support). We even had attendings from multiple departments who encouraged their residents/fellows to go! In addition, US Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA47) recorded an amazing message of support for us, and urges Stanford administration to bargain fairly.

“Hi, this is Congresswoman Katie Porter, candidate for the US Senate. Resident physicians at Stanford Healthcare voted to form a union more than a year ago, and it is unacceptable that they are still without a contract. What these resident physicians are asking for is a contract that lets them get enough sleep so that they can deliver quality care to patients and not have to risk driving home so tired that they are endangering lives.

This negotiation is not just about the rights of the resident physicians as workers. It’s also about quality healthcare – what kinds of care we’re going to receive as patients. Stanford Healthcare raked in millions of dollars of earnings last year. It is time for them to come to the table in good faith and negotiate a contract with these doctors so they can focus on delivering the best possible patient care.”
